Employment Opportunities at Three Bells Books
We are accepting applications now for a part-time “temporary” employee! If interested please apply soon through the online application below. Interviews would likely start almost immediately and then we’d train late March and then you’d start the first week of April. This position is to fill in for someone who will be on medical leave for a few months, but if things work out you’d be on the top of our list the next time we need to hire someone for a regular position.
Why are you on the Fat Hill Brewing website for a bookstore job application? Your favorite local brewery is the parent company of the bookstore. The bookstore has a fancy website but the form functions aren’t very good so we are using part of the FHB site to collect applications.
Who we are looking for: The emphasis at Three Bells will be on amazing customer service, personal recommendations, and community-building, so we are looking for the best bookworms in the area to join our team! Not only must you be good at the usual retail sales stuff (running a complicated POS with lots of buttons, stocking shelves, cleaning, carrying, answering the phone, having a relentlessly friendly attitude, etc), we also need our staff to be enthusiastic readers. Although you can’t be expected to have read every book ever written, we’d like the staff to be well read enough to answer general literary questions of all kinds and recommend books on a person to person basis. (We have tools to help you with this but a baseline knowledge of the book world is a must.) Our staff will also be in charge of running the occasional book club, reading to a kids group, or leading a kids activity so ease speaking in front of groups is important. If that wasn’t enough, we also have a small bar component to the bookstore, so our staff will be pouring drinks (wine, beer, soft drinks), answering menu questions, and ID-ing customers. The staff at Three Bells wears many many hats!
At this time, we are only hiring folks that are 21 years of age and up.
Availability is key: Right now we are looking for people that are available most Saturdays noon to 4 pm and most Sundays 1 pm to 4 pm. There would be some extra hours available during the week to shelve books if you have time. Our best guest right now is that you’d have this schedule for around two - three months before our regular person is back to work some time in June or July.
Compensation + perks:
Although the bookstore plans to pay a competitive rate, we think many bookworms will find our generous employee discount the most attractive feature of the salary package. A part-time job at Three Bells would be great for someone who already has a full time gig elsewhere who is just wanting to pick up shift or two a week.
General vibe + mission:
It’s the goal of Three Bells to nurture the love of reading and connect our area with all kinds of books. We hope we can be a special new place of learning and networking for any bookish person in the area, no matter their age or interests. There will be lots of bookish events where you can meet and have great conversations. There will be no book snobbery. (Life is short, read whatever you want!) There will be lots and lots of fun.
Three Bells is very aware of our role of a new cultural gatekeeper in our city. Bookstores everywhere have had this role for hundreds of years and we take it seriously. We believe reading widely and with an open mind makes us better people and better citizens of the community. With the recent wave of book bans all across the country, it is more important than ever for independent bookstores to be vibrant centers of unrestricted intellectual and artistic life. Expect the vibe of the store to be inclusive and diverse — there will be something for everyone. If you’re not comfortable selling all kinds of books enthusiastically, then this is probably not the place for you.
